Tim Gunn: Guide to Style and The View
Did ya’ll watch Tim Gunn on The View yesterday? The man is fabulous. I never get over how well-spoken he is. Some celebs are great when they’re taped, but not as eloquent in real life. The Gunn is as awesome in real life as he is on tape (and I’m drawing on my own experiences as well, not just from his talk show appearences–I met him back in July.)
On The View, they showed a short clip regarding some fashion choices women show make, and then he appeared in a segment with Whoopi and Elisabeth. With a few models, he talked about the “staple” pieces we should all have in our wardrobe, and he compliments the girls’ style choices, especially Whoppi’s flashy red boots. Whoopi has been on many-a worst dressed lists, but for Tim, what she’s wearing is not as important as that she feel confident and shows her own sense of style.
And that’s the bottom line of Guide to Style, Tim’s newest show, which had a “sneak peak” last night. I’m not sure why they didn’t just call it a premier. They showed a whole episode…
I expected the show to be a lot like my fave–What Not to Wear. However, while Stacy and Clinton of WNTW thrive on poking fun at their make-over-ee (honestly, they can get on my nerves sometimes with their snarkiness), Tim and Veronica, his co-host, were more gentle. They didn’t completely sugarcoat things, but they did allow the lady on the show to completely make her own choice, just with a bit of their help. In addition to buying her the clothes, they also presented her with a designer handbag (gasp), a designer dress (bigger gasp), and a string of black pearl (I’m really sucking air now).
Better yet, they didn’t make her throw away all of her clothes, and, on top of everything, they had her talk to a “life coach” to determine the underlying problem with her fashion (in this case, she felt like she was getting old). They also talked about the things that everyone should have in their wardrobe (like he mentioned on The View), and Tim showed the reason why he was such a respected person at Parson’s–the man took a blank picture of her drawn on a piece of paper and used a marker to draw on clothes that looked AMAZING.
Tonight, Bravo is showing the real “premier” episode (entirely new from what I can see), and afterwards, they’re announcing the contestants for Project Runway. Woo Hoo!
That reminds me…if you’re a blogger, head over to the contest page and think about signing up for Project Blog. It’s going to be a fun time for everyone, with some awesome prizes.
Don’t have a time for Project Blog? I’ve got a contest for you too! Head here for rules on winning a great DVD from Reality on Bravo!

I am still on the fence with this show. Not because of Tim or the content. More because I do not know if I am personally ready for it. I’m also still stuck in the first chapter of his book (which the show is based on). I think its really that I’m afraid what I will find out about my fashion. I’ve always blamed the lack of money factor with a slice of “well I’m in college sweatpants and flippies are fine.” But, I know that Tim is going to really tell me what is up-through tv and the book. As I met him in person with Alli, I know what Tim teaches is genuine. Sigh. Let’s be honest. I just hate change, but really need one (especially in fashion). At least I have great hair..
