The Kathy Emmy Speech Saga Continues
“It made my heart sick to see people in the audience at the Emmy’s laughing at Griffin’s remarks. It should not be acceptable to mock anyone’s faith! We have to start changing the hearts and minds of people on this subject.”
According to reports, a Christian-based theater group has taken out a $100,000 ad in USA Today to condemn Kathy Griffin’s Emmy speech and everyone who laughed at it.
Miracle Theater has noted that they would have forgiven Kathy had she apologized. They called her comments slanderous and a “mockery” of the Christian faith.
Dumbasses.
I’m a Christian. Actually, I’m fairly religious when compared to most - I read my Bible, I pray, and I love talking about religion. What Kathy did was not mocking the Christian faith. It was a humorous comment on all the so-called Christians who thank god for their achievements on stage. I mean, come on. Do you really think that God sits and watches the Emmy’s to determine a winner? Do you really think that half of there people actually thank God on a regular basis for their talents? No and no. They simply want to “look good” by thanking God. So, Kathy did something ingenious - she turned the tables to “look bad” for not thanking god. Either way it’s still press.
Oh, and get a clue, Miracle Theater. You could have spent that $100,000 on those less fortunate–people who really need that money. This is exactly the kind of religion that Kathy speaks out against.
Oh, and here’s the top ten reasons why YOU CAN SUCK IT TOO.

So tell me again how personally attacking the name of Jesus is not offensive to Christians? Kathy’s statement wasn’t just a denial of a belief in Jesus: it was directed at Jesus to be offensive.

No, it was a statement against the celebrities who use Jesus to look good. Anyone who watches Kathy and understands her sense of humor knows that.

I love Jesus. I love Kathy. Can’t we all just get along?

Daniel, read Matthew 5:39 and consider what the best response would be to Kathy’s comment.
Sincerely,
BJ, an atheist who knows the Bible better ‘n you. And a bigger fan of Kathy Griffin ‘n Jebus.

I can’t believe people get so rilled up over a joke. Bad joke or not, it’s a damn joke. Everyone gets offended sometime. Relax and it will be someone else’s turn in the barrel next time.

You should do your homework before accusing people of not spending their money “properly”. The theater and its parent company have donated tons of money and time to various organizations and causes…FAR more money than the cost of the ad. The ad got the point across for a price.
If you claim to be a Christian and wasn’t the least bit hurt by her comments, then you’re missing the entire message of being a Christian. I know there are many Christians praying for her and anyone that laughed, agreed, or wasn’t affected by her comments.

Just because this group has donated money in the past doesn’t justify spending six figures on an advertisement when it could have been spent in Christian love instead.
Christianity isn’t about denouncing others publicly as far as I’m concerned.

[…] And, if Kathy is truly anti-religious and “needs help,” then how is a $100,000 ad in USA Today going to help her? Someone we as Christians be opening our arms to those so “in […]

Jesus Christ denounced people publicly…Luke 11:37-42.
Sure, people can argue whether money is spent wisely or not…the same goes for people who build 100 foot crosses on mountain tops. A medium was chosen that would reach the most people as quick as possible. It’s sad to think their action would get condemned faster than Kathy’s comments…especially by “Christians”.
The most important thing to Christians is the Great Commission…no matter the price, whether it’s money or one’s own life. If only one person is brought to Christ as a result of this, then it was fully worth every penny. Why? Because that’s priceless.
September 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
What’s the value of all of the people action like this turn away from Christ? Because honestly, it’s public action like this that makes people stand up and say, “Hey, wait a minute. I don’t want to be a part of an organization like that.” At the end of the day, you have to weight whether you’re doing more gathering or more driving.
I’m not about to get in a “verse battle” with you either. I read the whole Bible, not sentences at a time. Doing so is really dangerous to an entire faith as far as I am concerned.
And for the record, I personally don’t agree with building 100-foot crosses either.

Personally, I am a deist and I think her remarks were out of line. You could not make that joke about any other religion or personal belief without a huge backlash. Why the double standard. Why not all or nothing?
As for the $100,000, it seems well spent. It created conversation. Opened up dialogue. Long ago, I was once a missionary and learned about there is a need for both local and global purpose money. One without the other is a guarantee for a cause to fail.

Thanks Bj for the comment. But Kathy didn’t offend me: she offended the name of Jesus. Kathy’s comment made light of celebs thanking Jesus when it is obvious they do not back it up with their lifestyles. I get the point and I agree with her on that part. But she didn’t call out any of the people in the audience which could have been a more logical conclusion. Instead she directed her comment at Jesus!
I’m not saying I necessarily agree with 100 ft crosses or Bible verse wars. From my perspective, if she had stopped with her first statement most arguments being made for her could be legit (though I personally believe in Jesus and his sovereignty, not to debate it here). If you sit back and logically think about what was said, she decided not to poke fun at people who flippantly mention Jesus and hold them responsible for their ignorance, but instead attack the person many people of faith worship. This is not an attack against Kathy or her poor taste in jokes. This is making a statement in favor of Jesus on the same national platform that the comments in question were made.
If others can be offended, why can’t Christians? If others can take stands, why can’t we? Why all of the sudden are we guilty of exaggerating a joke that is offensive to us and others are applauded for doing the same in a different situation? (Don Imus, Isaiah Washington…)
Is it more appropriate to defend a comedian I like than defend a religious ideal or person I sincerely agree with?
It is a matter of respect and I firmly believe that people that hear of this and read this can identify the lack of respect shown. My freedom of speech is not unlimited, as much as I may want it to be.

The Miracle Theater in Pigeon Forge spent $90,440 on a full-page advertisement in USA Today that ran nationally Monday, proclaiming “enough is enough.”
Boy $90,440! That money could have been spent on a lot better things. The theater is sponsoring a petition on its Web site, http://www.miracletheater.com
So I went to sign this petition just to have my comment posted. I wrote:
“I’m a stand-up comic, and I understand both Kathy and your position. With all the different groups out there, it is exceeding difficult to not offend a few in a comedy career. Can’t we all just get along? It’s the Christian thing to do. I’m not surprised to hear that devout Christians are offended by Kathy’s remarks. I was talking to my Buddhist friend about it and he thought she was hysterical. The reality is that, no mater what your beliefs are, there are no shortage of people who DON’T AGREE WITH YOU. Surround yourself with people who do agree with your beliefs, and don’t fuss too much about the ones who don’t, because you can waste your entire lives arguing and getting nowhere. Making a national to do about all this just puts Kathy in the spotlight. Let’s face it, there are much worse celebrities out there driving drunk and endangering lives. If your beliefs are that Kathy will be going to hell for what she said, then that should be plenty. http://www.FunnyMexican.com”
Within a few minutes, my comment was pushed down to the next page because of all the offended Christians that signed after me. You’ll also find many other people who signed and like myself thought the Christian groups were overreacting.
Lastly I would like to point out the most entertaining bit of irony. Next to the AP news article is a Google sponsored ad list that says “Kathy Griffin Tickets – on sale now”

“it should not be acceptable to mock anyones faith?”
MY ASS!
MOCKING FAITH is exactly what the intelligencier have been doing for years, and beleivers have finnally caught on to the very fact that most SMARTER people have known for a while…
god/heaven/hell/miracles/…..none of this crap really exists….
AND, if you can’t take religon anything but “super seriously”, then I’m afraid you fall into the category of those idiots of 1291 that simply got it into their heads that the First Crusade was anything other than a cynical exercise in the creation of a CHURCH ARMY. Many thousands of the most fanatical…led by a man called “Peter the Hermit” simply got this fanatiscism into their heads, and marched forth, killing anything that got in their way…..canibalizing when they ran out of food (you can of course, justify any behaviour when it is supposedly done for religious faith)…..SLAUGHTERED to a MAN of them when they crossed into Saracen territory (against the good advice of the Emperor of Byzantium, Alexis)….the fool Peter was one of the first to run, and got away to influence the rest of the Crusade to its detriment…..
WE are still feeling the effects from the year 1291……WHEN are the believers going to stop thumping the bible?
Ok….I’ll proove to you it’s all in your head…I’m going to make a statement, and if god exists, it will do something about me straight away…..
GOD DOES NOT EXIST….and may god strike me down dead if it were NOT SO……
I’m waiting………still waiting………
I’ll be waiting an eternity without result on THAT one!

Surround yourselves with people that agree with you??
It would be interesting….no, laughable, to go to a debate or conference sponsored by one of these religions……a bunch of people standing/sitting around all AGREEING with each other?
What a bunch of SEAGULLS
