Paula plays the press

Paula Abdul is presented with the Woman of the Year award from the Nevada Ballet Theatre.
After stumbling through a series of interviews to promote “American Idol,” Paula Abdul spent some time trying to reverse the negative press.
This week on “Hey, Paula,” the former pop princess stopped by “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to try and clear her name. There were several other press meetings — mostly at a Nevada Ballet Theatre awards presentation — to try and make up from what we now understand was simply “insomnia.” OK, that explains it all.
One thing we learned this week is the editing on “Hey, Paula” is creative. The Nevada Ballet Theatre awarded Paula with the Woman of the Year award. This came after last week’s episode, which featured Paula at the Grammy Awards. In reality, the ballet event happened before the Grammys. But I digress.
Paula, after a successful attempt to clear her name on Jay Leno, joked about needing a few martinis. It was good to see Paula having a good sense of humor about the situation, especially after all the crying. (Editor’s note: I love the crying. Seriously, it’s the crying that makes the show.)
But this week’s biggest focus of the half hour was the ballet award. Simon, Randy and Ryan were on hand to help honor Paula. And Simon even had something sincere to say. “There are few people who have achieved what you have achieved over the years,” he said.
Until next week, you’ll just have to imagine what kind of craziness will come. It definitely will be worth tuning in — at least it has been thus far. Check out more about “Hey, Paula” at watchingamericanidol.com.
