Tonight’s episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was one of the best I’ve seen in the while. Although I love this show, a lot of the time I find myself thinking that some of the people will simply go back to their old ways after the Fab Five leave. They appreciate it, but it’s a “for now” change, not a life change.
Today, the show was about Ronie, a high school senior who was going to his prom and needed help getting ready for college. You could just tell that this show changed his life. They not only helped Ronie clean up his look and room, but they gave him a computer, all the college supplies he will need, a cool new wardrobe, and TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS to cover an college costs he may have above and beyond the scholarship he received. Ronie didn’t come from the wealthiest household, but he learned to make the most of his situation, even without a father figure in his life. He didn’t become a child of the street. He persevered.
It’s nice to see someone who deserves it really get the benefits of this show. Ronie didn’t just become a subject because his look needed help - the Fab Five helped him make his dreams come true when he literally couldn’t. Because of his family’s financial situation, he would have had a hard time in school, but he worked hard to get his life turned around and do what’s right. And for that, he was rewarded.
So, tonight reminded me why I love Bravo and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. They really are making dreams happen. Not only that, but they pimped out his prom, giving him a night that he’ll never, ever forget.
